Jodi Lynn Turpin: Choosing Joy podcast, it's me Jody Lynn Turpin. Today I want to talk about breath. how we breathe and how we feel into that breath. Because I truly believe that breath reminds us of who we are. It relaxes us, it brings us back to joy. And we really remember joy through our breath. And so let's just talk about it a little bit. So what is breath? It's obviously the life force that keeps us alive as we breathe in and out, it nourishes our body. But basically breath is a movement of energy. It moves energy within us, around us, and nourishes us on a very deep level and not just in our body, our mind. soul in the field that surrounds us. So when we inhale, it's an arrival. And when we exhale, we release. And then those moments in between, right before the inhale, right before the exhale, those are stillness. It's just a moment of stillness. And in that stillness is where joy lives. So within breath, there are three different kinds of phases when thinking about it. So there's the noticing, like right this moment, how do you feel in your breath? Are you breathing deep enough? or are you not breathing, you're holding your breath right now? Are you taking shallow breaths real high up in your chest? What does your breath look like right now? And so the separation from that is your pause, like what is actually happening within your breath? really separating it out and then the return. So what shifts happen within you with your exhale? What changes, what feelings can you feel? So I want to get right to it. want to breathe together. This has for surely been the major thing in my life to find joy again when I felt disconnected, purposeless, sad, angry, frustrated, know, overexcited. It's even a feeling that I feel quite a bit, which can be very intense, as you know. So within this breath, I want you to think the breath as a circle. So there's an inhale, a hold, an exhale, and then a pause before inhaling again. So when you go with your inhale, then your hold, exhale and pause. We're really going to focus. There's no long holding in this breath. It's very easy to do, but if you're not driving or not walking or doing something, if you could just pause for seriously about two minutes and close your eyes with this breath, you can really feel how it changes. So before we get started, I'm gonna tell you we're gonna do an inhale of four, a hold of four, an exhale of six, and then the pause again before inhaling of two. And I'm talk you through three rounds of this to complete a full circle. And at the end, you'll just inhale again, like you regularly would. So right in this moment, take a second and think about how you're feeling. How do you feel in your body right now, in your mind? Do you feel connected? And so for your intention in this breath, how would you like to feel? Do you want to keep this same feeling, keep this neutrality you're feeling, this peace feeling? Or do you want to feel more joy? Or do you need to calm down? Think about what you desire. Because that's part of the exhale. But this time, we're just going to set the intention before starting and not worry about it while you're in the breath. because once you set an intention, it is there. Intention is pretty much everything in your life. One of the, one of the every things. So for, you're going to inhale what you desire and exhale what you release and allow those natural pauses. So I will count for the first round. And then for the following two rounds, I will just say the words, inhale. hold, exhale or pause. So let's get started. So take a moment. You can even place your hand on your chest or your heart, your belly. We're gonna inhale, two, three, four. two, three, four, exhale, two, three, four, five, six, pause, two, inhale. home. Exhale. Pause. Inhale. cold. Exhale. pause. Inhale regularly and exhale regularly. You could do this breath for longer if you wanted. It's a very saturated, saturating breath. And this is the breath of joy. The one that connects you back to joy. That frequency and no judgment if that's not what you feel right now. because it's always something we need to continuously practice. So practicing this for a whole week, the four, four, six, two breath is extremely beneficial. So now that you've come back to your regular breathing, what changes do you feel in yourself? Do you feel a sense of joy or peace, which are very close to each other? Do you feel relaxed? Do you feel like you could take a step forward without being reactive? What do you feel right now? Breath is such a beautiful bridge between your body and joy. Every day focusing on this, whether you're in your meditation, a hike, cooking, you're journaling, you're hiking in the woods, playing with your kids. It's something fun you can do together with your family. reminder that you can connect yourself back to the stillness to the calm. Just from breathing just from changing your breath a tiny bit for a short amount of time. And you're not learning something new right now. You're remembering you're remembering to listen to your body when it needs to calm. when it desires a little bit more peace to come out of a nervous state, out of an anxious state. And the best time is when you feel disconnected in any way. In any way, how do you feel disconnected in your life? Breathe into that intention. Let yourself breathe. And even after you do this breath, if you need the deep inhale, ⁓ and that sigh out, it feels so good. Also, my dogs are sitting right next to me and as I exhale that way, they both let out quite a loud. exhale release. And I thought that was really beautiful, because we can also help our dogs calm down or our children just by breathing near someone. And we'll get into that into other in other podcast episodes. But what did your breath teach you today? When you get done with this podcast? Think about it for a few minutes. What did just that small little breathing exercise, two minutes. What did that teach you? What did you learn about your body about yourself? I would love to hear about it. This breath, or sometimes I call it like the pre meditation before ⁓ entering your inner Eden is what I do when I work one on one with people is always part of it. So we breathe in lots of different ways, breathing in through our feet or our crowns, through our heart space, and really breathing with intention to calm the body down, to go into a state where we can travel within to our inner Eden to learn, grow, heal, change, and connect deeper to joy. And I would love to hear how you felt about this today. It would bring me so much joy to hear about how you feel about your breath today.
